Some Advice and Blabber....
I have Never gotten bored of tending to my altars or practicing magic. There have been times where I have taken a much needed break, but Never have I gotten an itch to ditch my deities for a new God or Goddess to honor. I've never understood people that jump from one pantheon to the next faster than a girl will change her clothes! I have had to get rid of deities that were no longer good for me, meaning that they and I have had some misunderstandings and no longer worked well together. But most of the elevated beings that I honor have been with me for a long time.
Most people when they first start out try to find them selves and what works for themselves. And that is completely ok. But if you have formulated a relationship with a deity and then get bored and give it up for another new shinier one....over and over again...that's not ok (in my opinion)! I knew someone that had a few deities from every pantheon. He would jump every six months with his interests because he got bored with them. I found him to be weakened by this practice. He didn't have a strong connection with one particular God/Goddess. He had many weak connections with alot of beings that were confused and hurt as to which direction he was headed in. He had so many half assed initiations that he didn't amount to much when it came to his magical practice. And he blended them all together, which is wrong. Traditions are traditions and mixing practices that have nothing to do with each-other because you are a cherry picker, just makes for muddled and ineffectual magic.
Many fluffy people on the internet tell newbies that cherry picking is the way to go. Trust me, when I tell you it is not. When you are new, it is ok to explore many traditions till you find your calling. But setting up a million altars, just because, will get you no where. One should do research, and alot of it, before setting up an altar to a Spirit. You should have had dreams with the Spirit you wish to honor or signs that they are calling to you. Spirits pick you, not the other way around. It's like going up to a complete strangers house, that you have never met or seen before and knocking on their door, asking to come in for lunch. Most sane people don't do that. Now if you've seen someone around and maybe talked to them a couple of times....you might ask them to meet you for coffee or exchange numbers and talk before just showing up at their house!
Extend the same courtesies you would have with your fellow human beings to the Gods! And use your common sense. If you find out a God/Goddess will hurt you if you don't do X, Y and Z correctly, that's probably not the kind of Spirit you would want to get involved with. If you can't directly communicate with your Spirits and someone tells you that you need an intermediary like a priest to speak with them....probably not worth your time or money to pay someone all the time to speak directly with a entity you honor. If someone tells you that you have to spend hundreds of dollars on initiations, then I would advise you look up another tradition. There are many traditions that don't involve the scam of way to expensive initiations or don't involve initiations at all.
I have spent, in the past, hundreds of dollars on initiations from a former so called teacher of mine and got ripped off. I won't say what religion or who it was, because well....I don't feel like it, but trust me, it was not worth it. Even though it was a beautiful religion, it was set up by humans to scam others out of a LOT of money! I have made many mistakes in my past and that is why I bothered to type this up, to help the green newbies, not get scammed! No one should follow a teacher blindly, get cut off from other religions, be told that their way is the only way, and that you can't talk to the Gods on your own. How would you know what they wanted from you, if you were doing your practice right, or if you are using the correct ingredients for a spell if you can't ask them your self? Sure you could have someone else do it for you but if they aren't available, what then?
Trust me when I say that shit is a scam!
